In this time, 38 patients (7 males and 31 females, 41 cases, 57 ears)
with ear keloid, who visited our hospital from January 2003 to March
2008, were studied. Their treatment methods and recurrences were
investigated.
Operation was performed on 29 patients (31 cases, 46 ears), operation
only in 21 (30 ears) and a combination of operation and irradiation in
10 (16 ears). Recurrence was observed in 5 cases (8ears) with no
irradiation in all the cases. The recurrence rate was 26.7% in operation
only and 0% in the combination. Early side effects of irradiation
therapy such as pigmentation were not observed in any irradiated cases.
Since the patients with ear keloid are relatively young and the
recurrent rate is not so high in operation only, we recommend not to
indicate irradiation in the initial operation for ear keloid and to
adopt postoperative irradiation only in re-operation of recurrent cases. |
